Am I the only parent who is not excited about school starting? I’ve seen and liked pictures on Facebook and Instagram of parents celebrating the first day of school, little ones with their new book bags, sneakers and hair dos make me smile but I’M NOT READY. It’s officially the end of summer and I’ve purchased nothing off their supply lists (I did pick up backpacks). I don’t think I’m ever ready for the first day of school, to be honest.
I’ve been a parent for 10 years now (man where did the time go) and my oldest has been going to school since he was 3 yrs old. The very first day or pre-k was nerve wracking. Would he miss us? Would he get along with the other kids in his class? Would he really learn anything? Will the teachers like him? Those were just a few of the questions that were going through my mind. Alas he made it and is now heading to the 6th grade!!! My baby is going to the 6th grade! I still can’t get over it! I looked at his supply list and saw that every 6th grader MUST have a gmail account! When did that become the norm?
So why am I not ready for school? Because of the structure! I like structure, but only when I’m the creator of it! Back to school means homework, projects, early bedtime, reading assignments and the dreaded COMMON CORE math! Most importantly back to school means packing lunch!
Lunch boxes were cute when we were kids and they still are today… the issue I have is what the heck to put in them. I have three little Brown’s and they are all VERY different. I hate making them the same thing every single day but they are so picky and which leaves me clueless. I would say heck yeah to school lunch everyday that but gets expensive ($40 bucks a month for 3 kids. You do the common core math). I have to figure out what makes life easy for me but keeps them full and happy all at the same time. Last year was a year of sandwiches (the previous years was as well) I’d really prefer if they had more options. I know for sure that I wouldn’t want to eat a darn salami sandwich every single day!
I’ve been on the hunt for cool ways to perk up their lunch bags and found some really great sites with good and easy ideas… I’ll try some and report back soon.
Are you ready for back to school? If not what are your plans to get ready, cause I don’t have any!
Until next time…
