About Hooked on Crochet

Teaching a Timeless Craft to a New Generation of Makers

Hooked on Crochet with Mrs. Deveter was created from a passion for fiber arts, creative education, and the belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to discover their creative potential.

Crochet is more than making beautiful things. It’s a practical, lifelong skill that encourages creativity, perseverance, and a sense of accomplishment.

Our workshops introduce participants to crochet through approachable, step-by-step instruction that makes learning enjoyable and accessible.

From learning to hold a crochet hook to completing a first handmade project, every lesson is designed to celebrate progress, encourage exploration, and build confidence.

Our philosophy is simple: Every stitch counts, every learner matters, and creativity belongs to everyone.

What Students Learn

Real Skills. Real Projects. Real Accomplishments.

At the heart of Hooked on Crochet is a commitment to teaching participants how to crochet.

Our lessons focus on foundational techniques while allowing students to explore their creativity through hands-on projects.

Depending on age, experience, and program length, participants may learn:

  • Crochet tools, materials, and terminology
  • How to hold a crochet hook and manage yarn tension
  • Foundation chains and basic crochet stitches
  • Reading beginner-friendly patterns and stitch charts
  • Changing colors and exploring crochet techniques
  • Creating handmade accessories and functional projects
  • Developing creative designs and personalizing finished pieces

Beyond the stitches, participants practice following instructions, solving problems, working independently, and persevering through challenges.

Each completed project represents more than a finished item. It reflects a new skill learned, a challenge overcome, and a reason to feel proud.

Crochet & Mindfulness

Finding Focus and Calm Through Creativity

In a world filled with constant activity, academic pressures, and digital distractions, finding moments to slow down can be valuable.

Crochet offers an opportunity to pause, concentrate, and engage in a creative activity.

The repetitive movements involved in stitching can encourage a sense of calm while giving participants something positive and productive to focus on.

Through Hooked on Crochet, students are encouraged to:

  • Practice patience and concentration
  • Develop perseverance when learning challenging skills
  • Explore creativity as a healthy outlet for stress
  • Build confidence through achievable goals
  • Discover a hands-on activity they can enjoy beyond the classroom

For students navigating academic pressures, including test-related anxiety, crochet can become one of several calming activities they may choose to practice outside of testing situations.

Our goal is not simply to teach students how to crochet, but to introduce a creative skill they can return to throughout their lives.

Hooked on Crochet in Action

Learning, Creating, and Growing Together

Hooked on Crochet is more than a lesson plan. It’s a hands-on experience where creativity comes to life.

During the Summer 2026 NeON Arts program in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Mrs. Deveter introduced 12 young participants to crochet through a six-week workshop series.

Students explored crochet history, foundational techniques, color changes, and creative projects, including keychains, granny squares, and accessories.

The experience demonstrated the value of providing young people with opportunities to learn a practical skill while exploring their individual creativity.

Building on that experience, Hooked on Crochet continues to develop new learning opportunities, including creative upcycling projects that combine crochet with fashion and personal expression.

Every workshop brings new ideas, new discoveries, and new makers into the crochet community.
