Hey Y’all,

Black History Month is still in full swing over here, and I’m so excited to shine a spotlight on someone who truly inspires me! Meet Jamyla Murphy, the powerhouse CEO and Founder of The Haus of My’zja. She’s not just a crochet fashion designer—she’s an artist who blends traditional crochet techniques with modern trends to create jaw-dropping, high-fashion pieces.

The Haus of My’zja isn’t just about making clothes; it’s about storytelling through stitches. Every handmade garment is a work of art, designed with sustainability, creativity, and individuality in mind. From bold patterns to intricate details, Jamyla’s designs are all about self-expression and timeless style.

How long have you been crocheting?
I have been crocheting for 18 years now

Who has had the greatest influence on your development as a professional crocheter?
Many people have influenced my journey as a professional crocheter, but my greatest inspiration has been my son, Adonis. As I continue to grow and develop new skills, he has always been there, watching and learning alongside me. Over time, he has even cultivated his own unique style. Even on days when I don’t feel my best, he encourages me by asking, “Mom, can I try?” That simple question is enough to motivate me and keep me going!

Who are the artists or designers you admire within the crochet and broader fiber arts community?
I admire so many artist , my good cro friends Gregory Stitch, Schlisha and Kakes Crochet, there are many more but I’ll just name a few , Crystal the runner up from Stitch Factor and Chelsi B.

Who would you consider a dream collaborator for a large-scale crochet project or collection?
I would absolutely love to collaborate with Issa Rae, although she’s not a designer her light and energy, I feel would be a great collaboration for the Haus of My’zja and I would love to collaborate with Anthony from Project Runway, I love his style and eye for unique designs.

What types of projects or commissions do you find most rewarding creatively and professionally?
I find that video projects are most rewarding for my business, in this society videos are a top marketing tool for the industry and for growth.

What materials, yarns, or tools do you consider essential for maintaining the quality of your work?
Essentials are definitely yarn and crochet hooks!
Quality is key for me! I find that with crochet it’s best to use yarns that have texture and longevity for the fashion industry! Hook sizes play a major factor with the quality yarn to create the perfect fit and look for your desired garment or design

How do you balance the creative side of crochet with the demands of running a business, such as marketing, client management, and finances?
Balance is something I’m still working on! As a single mother of an autistic son, it’s not easy but I balance my business with the love I have for fashion and the love I have for my son ! It keeps me grounded and focused!

Where do you envision your crochet business evolving in the next 5–10 years, both creatively and professionally?
Creatively I see my crochet business evolving to a place that stands out as a unique experience over the actual design itself! I see my business evolving to build a new world of creativity in the entertainment industry! I can see my business becoming a place where it revolutionizes the way others see the way they wear garments even for those one of one designs walking red carpets for a new movie premiere.
