Hey Y’all,
This month I’ve vowed to shine the light on some of the amazing fiber artist I know. Today I’m sarting with 10 questions with Vanessa Smith who I had the pleasure of meeting during Crochet Fashion Week in 2023.
Vanessa is the Creative Director and lead Crochet Fashion Designer at Kakes Kreations; a custom luxury crochet fashion and handbag brand. She established her brand in late 2013 and has been working diligently ever since to push the envelope and help change the narrative on crochet fashion.
Vanessa has created several Crochet Fashion collections including her Hip Hop Baby collection. Through her use of original designs, various fibers and quality construction – Vanessa strives to consistently set her brand a part by creating unique fashion pieces that not only push the envelope in fashion but also shakes the industry’s perception of what Crochet Fashion should be.

How long have you been crocheting?
I’ve been crocheting for over 30 years. My mom taught me when I was 12, and I’ve been hooked ever since!
Who has had the greatest influence on your development as a professional crocheter?
I give all praise to God. There were many times I wanted to give up, but I was always reminded that my God-given talent will continue to make room for me.
Who are the artists or designers you admire within the crochet and broader fiber arts community?
I admire all designers who have found their own lane and are thriving within it.
Who would you consider a dream collaborator for a large-scale crochet project or collection?
I’d be honored to collaborate with any dope designers who share my passion for fiber arts.
What inspired you to transition from hobbyist to professional crocheter?
I transitioned after having two littles within two years, and then Covid happened. It just made sense, and I haven’t looked back.

What inspired you to create the Dope People Crochet Facebook page?
I wanted a space where I could share and promote my patterns while fostering a positive crochet community. No cliques, no negativity, and none of the typical Facebook restrictions—I encourage everyone to share because there’s enough room for us all.
What types of projects or commissions do you find most rewarding creatively and professionally?
My favorite projects are milestone custom designs. There’s nothing more special than a client trusting me with their birthday or anniversary garment.
What materials, yarns, or tools do you consider essential for maintaining the quality of your work?
I’m currently in my Furls hooks era. I always feel like I’m about to create a masterpiece as soon as I pick one up. Pair that with a nice quality yarn from GuChet or 2Bossayknits, and it’s fashion greatness.
How do you balance the creative side of crochet with the demands of running a business, such as marketing, client management, and finances?
In my previous life (lol), I was an area supervisor and training coordinator for seven restaurant locations, so managing, organizing, and execution are second nature to me. I keep a list for everything and follow routines to stay efficient. I also believe in under-promising and over-delivering.
Where do you envision your crochet business evolving in the next 5–10 years, both creatively and professionally?
I’m looking forward to being invited to showcase at a major fashion week across the country and world, designing for celebrities, hosting a crochet convention to highlight emerging crochet fashion designers, creating a nonprofit that utilizes crochet to help young women, opening a handbag boutique, and continuing to facilitate the growth of a positive crochet community.
I’m so excited for Vanessa’s future. Along with Crochet she has also created a print company called Crowns and Puffs where she sells Melanin Greeting cards.
Until next time,
MUAH
