Growing up in the Black church one of the mainstays was Church Mothers. They had their own pew and were often adorned in white garments from head to toe. Mother Williams, Mother Washington, Mother Dasher, Mother Easterling, Mother White, Mother Funrose, Mother Bryant, and Mother Tyce are just a few of the remarkable women who hold a revered place in my heart and within their congregations, embodying the spirit of faith, resilience, love, and peppermints. In this blog post, I will celebrate and honor the invaluable contributions of Black Church Mothers and share the profound impact they have on their communities.
Before I go into those details, I’d like to take a moment to celebrate the memory of Mother Retha Brown. As I’ve previously mentioned, my husband had the privilege of growing up with both his Paternal and Maternal grandmothers, and Mother Retha Brown was his maternal Grandma – a true gem. Although my time with her was brief, she left a lasting impact on my life. During our dating days, I would often visit her home while she worked her magic in the kitchen, and boy could should cook and bake! I had the honor of tasting her southern grits and lawd knows I was never the same. She was a kind and generous woman and you could never leave her presence empty-handed! My husband fondly recalls his last encounter with her, describing her as an angel dressed in all white as she made her way to church one Sunday morning. The memories of Mother Retha Brown continue to resonate, a testament to the warmth and love she shared with everyone fortunate enough to know her.
